Nathan HPL 020
Disclaimer: Not Written by a Trail Runner
Before reading this review you should know that I do not use this as a trail running vest. If you have questions hold it holds up or adjustable while running, this isn’t your review. If you’re wondering how well it works as a light/minimalist option for hikes then you’ve come to the right spot..
Size
First and foremost, this thing is small. It’s some mesh straps with a bag to hold a 2L bladder and at half a pound this thing is light. Real light.
Storage
The capacity of this vest is 6 liters. It has a main pouch for the bladder, a smaller pouch just behind it, and two pouches on the straps.
Generally I fill the bladder to just over 1 liter for shorter or less strenuous hikes. I am also able to carry a few first aid supplies in the main pouch.
The smaller pouch is able to hold a few hand towels and 4-5 granola bars.
The pouches on the straps are different and serve different purposes. The right strap pouch is open but can be tightened with a draw string tightener. I tend to place an extra bar, sunglasses, or a hand towel here.
The left strap has a zippered pocket with an external pocket. I primarily use this pocket for my phone. It is the perfect size for my 5 inch, 18:9 ratio, Xperia ZX2 Compact. If your phone is much bigger than this then you’re going have to use the pouch on the right strap. One problem I have found is that sweat does get through the inside of the zippered pocket.
Price
Fortunately the Nathan HPL 020 doesn’t break the bank and can be found for $100.00 at your local REI store. It can also be found here at Amazon, and Prime eligible, for about $75.00.
Final Verdict
Overall this is a really great solution for people who are looking to hike with a little less on their back. I’ve used this on a variety of hikes ranging from a 3.5 mile out and back in Sunol to the longer 6.5 mile Bootjack Trail loop in Mount Tam.
