Of all the day hikes in the bay area this is my favorite. I found the Mt. Tamalpais loop from the AllTrails app and highly recommend using it while hiking. The 6 mile mile loop goes from the Mt. Tamalpais visitor, down to the Muir Woods, and back up. It is a tough trail with varied elevation change, a good break in the middle, and most noteworthy, a continuously great view. I suggest bringing trekking poles and/or a few breaks during the last third of the loop.
The Descent
First is approximately a two mile downhill stretch that is pretty rough on the knees. There are several stretches during this section that have a lot of roots sticking out of the ground so be on alert.
Rest Time
Next is the lap through Muir Woods. This is your rest time. The path is flat and is essentially a huge oval. It’s also nice place for a bathroom break. The area has restrooms, a souvenir shop, and a cafeteria. Unfortunately this is where you’ll come across many other people as well. MANY people.
The Ascent Back to the Car
Now that you’re all rested it’s time to go back. What goes down must come up. Right? The last third of the Mt. Tamalpais loop is mostly uphill. You’ll know you’re going the right way when you see a flowing stream to the left and nobody else around. An uneven path mixed with a lot of stairs in between make this the toughest section.
Going home
Now that the hike is done you’ll want to change your shirt and shoes at a minimum. It’s no fun riding back all sweaty and with uncomfortable. Check for ticks while you’re at it too.
After every hike I am starving. I generally eat a burger after this hike at Super Burger. The burgers are greasy and delicious. They also have tangy ketchup (which I like for some reason). Give them a try, you wont’ be disappointed.
Now you’re on your way home full and tired. Can’t wait till the next hike.
